(I aim to destroy another myself) First step in body exploration. How to reach the blind level of self-destruction.
This record was conceived as a erotic experience, exploding orifices - anus, wound, vagina, mouth -
until a final, grotesque revelation. Musically speaking, each piece was build on dephased layers and archaic loops of
processed string samples. This is minimal. This is liberation.
This is fulfillment. |

Why all these reflections on the role of the music critic? Well, while
researching for this review, I discovered that the guy behind L’Anus Solaire
committed suicide last New Year’s Eve, and it feels a bit strange reviewing
the work of a dead man. I don’t have to worry about hurting his feelings, but
he’s not going to be too interested in any constructive suggestions either.
So this review is just for those who might be interested in buying Orifices,
because this is a pretty fine piece of work.Named after George Bataille’s 1931
novel, and inspired by the erotic surrealism of Bataille, Hans Bellmer and of
course de Sade, L’Anus Solaire guide us on a journey through the female body,
entered through – yes! – orifices. The album, recorded in 2004, is divided into
four sections, each a trilogy, devoted to the anus, wounds, the vagina and the
mouth respectively. This rigid schematic framework and titles
like ‘Sodomie : Plaisir’ and ‘Coprophagie : Transgression’ (no translations
necessary, I trust) recall de Sade’s 120 Days of Sodom.Musically, Orifices
comprises dense, mesmerising layers of loops and samples, sounding more like
NON, the Whitehouse / Nurse With Wound 120 Murderous Passions collaboration, or
some of Coil’s more abrasive offerings than anything else. The album is also,
at 34 minutes, pretty short in the manner of NON. Distorted chimes give way to
repetitive siren tones, creating an atmosphere of menace and impending doom.
Vicious whipcracks punctuate discordant orchestral samples. Sustained organ
notes and off-key drones underlie operatic phrases. The work as a whole is
oppressively dark and nasty, yet quite restrained – despite the sexually
transgressive subject matter, L’Anus Solaire never really veer into full-on
power electronics. This is more dark ambient of the most pitch-black kind.
Orifices is accompanied by an elegant black-and-white (well, mostly black)
booklet containing photos of the orifices in question. Incidentally, my copy
of this album is in a jewel case, but I believe there’s a digipack edition as
well, with a different cover. The booklet contains detailed texts
(all in French), but these aren’t lyrics as such – give or take the odd
scream, whisper or vocal sample, the album is entirely instrumental.
Orifices is a very promising debut release from L’Anus Solaire. There are mp3s available on the website, and I urge you to check them out. Just don’t expect a follow-up album any time soon. Though sudden death doesn’t seem to have impeded Tupac Shakur’s musical career very much… |

Interesting new French act presenting their first release here
and dadicating it to examining human orifices (anus, wound, vagina
and mouth) from a similar perspective as the likes of de Sade and
Bataille have done in literature. There are always three tracks
for each orifice and the style always differs a bit from the
previous orifice. The actual sounds are quite difficult to
describe. Mostly the tracks are collages of cut up pieces of music, manipulated voices and synth sounds and occasional spoken samples. Everything is structured and put together in a really simplistic
manner, but still the result is interesting and the atmosphere is
very strange all thoughout the disc, even when the sounds are no
more than looped pianos or something. I have a really hard time
describing this release, but still I must say that I like it a lot
and I think the themes are nicely executed in the sounds as well.
Not for the most conservative industrial/ambient listeners.

Heathen Harvest | |||||
Welcome to Erotic Harvest, issue 2. Today, we steer to a more Western
direction, and into the minds of the ultra bizarre L'anus Solaire.
(Apparently L'anus Solaire committed suicide - expect sales to soar.)
For the record, I will refer to the tracks by their English titles here. Opener "Flowing:Mortality" starts with a nice Glockenspiel style childlike intro, with what sounds like an air siren in the background. And what's this I hear? Urination, or Vomiting in the background. Sexy! It won't take you long to realise the depth of the Erotica here, just look at the project name. Anus!! Excuse me while I stop giggling. To quote from the online marketing plea : "This record was conceived as an erotic experience, exploding orifices - anus, wound, vagina, mouth - until a final, grotesque revelation" If titles like "Slit:Calling", and my personal favourite, "Incest:Animality" Don't appeal to you, I suggest you press the "back" button on your browser. Porn, Incest, Bestiality, and Ambience. What more does anyone want, or need? Except this in your local record store soon! So what's the music like? Well it's typical Ambient, with frantic and distressed Electronica, and more than a hint of illegal antics performing in the background. Infact, I'm listening to "Incest:Animality" right now. Don't ask about the Intro. It's disappointing, I don't hear sheep or Donkeys. Lovely Orgasm sounds though. I shall assume that they were created by regular and ethical means. I suggest you do too. All puns and sex jokes aside, the music on here actually succeeds, nice deep Dark Ambience, Violent Noise Exchanges, and occasional tortured vocals. Sadly, I have no idea how to contact the label (I assume it's self-released), and tragically, we won't hear from this project again. I don't know if the creator committed suicide in the literal sense, or just ended this project, but one thing is for sure. It choked and spluttered to the end. Here come the puns again! But to all extents and purposes, Erotica is so hard to write about seriously, especially when you have a mind like mine, and an album with Anus in the title. Now, all butt jokes aside, this album should be pulled out the bottom of everyones piles, rear its ugly head once more, and ass-ume its rightful place in everyones rack. Points to those who counted all five puns there. Check it out. Christians, Priests, and the like-minded need not apply. |
